File under "Another Stupid Dead Kid"

Who would have thought? Daddy's BMW + 16 year-old kid + late night party = dead kid. I'm stunned.

Hingham High School is getting off to a sorrowful start today as students mourn the death of a standout lacrosse player killed in a high-speed car crash after an end-of-summer party, classmates and cops said.

Maybe we should file this under "Shitty Parenting 101".

(16-year-old Ted) Cochran was behind the wheel of his dad's BMW driving at least 100 mph when he lost control of the car and took out a utility pole before careening into the woods about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, police said. Neither teen was wearing a seat belt.

Cochran, who would have started his junior year today, got his driver's license in June and under state law wasn't permitted to be driving with another teen in the car.

Now is this incident a "tragedy" or merely the expected result of stupid, irresponsible behavior? I don't understand how anyone can be shocked or horrified by this. Kids die on our streets just like this every damn weekend, due in large part to reckless behavior and complete lack of personal responsibility, not to mention any kind of grasp on reality. But hey, maybe this was just some good kids who made a stupid mistake...or not. Yes, it gets worse.

In March, a Hingham High baseball player broke his ankle after he and another student were in a car accident after a party at Cochran's house, classmates said.

It was never a question of "if" Ted Cochran or one of his buddies would kill someone - it was a question of "when". Well, now that "when" is "now", do you think his death will have any impact on the future behavior of his peers? I'm not banking on it.

UPDATE (10/24/04): Well, this post certainly made the rounds - got people talking, I see. Good. Click HERE to read my final say on this matter. Then feel free to leave whatever poorly-spelled, invective-laden, homophobic death threats you deem necessary. Be warned, you may encounter comments from people less sympathetic than myself.
