Real New England Patriots

Seems the efforts of the Minuteman Project are already paying off.

PHOENIX - The Minuteman Project - an effort by citizens who have volunteered to patrol the Mexican border for illegal crossers and smugglers — has already borne fruit even before its official launch.

Participants helped federal agents make 18 arrests near Naco, authorities said Sunday. The volunteers were surveying the border to familiarize themselves with the area before starting their regular, monthlong patrols Monday.

"You observe them, report them and get out of the way," said Mike McGarry, a spokesman for the project that will concentrate on 23 miles of the San Pedro Valley.

Law enforcement officials said the volunteers were keeping the peace, despite concerns they might become confrontational with immigrants. Many of the volunteers were recruited over the Internet and some plan to be armed.

What? No bloodshed? No wandering hordes of skinheads butchering Mexican babies in the middle of the night? No "vigilante-style" justice in the desert at the business end of a rifle? You mean the ACLU (once again) got their panties in a damp bunch over nothing?

I'm stunned.

This group of citizen volunteers has done more to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into this country in one weekend than President Bush and the U.S. Congress have done in four years.

From one of the Minuteman Project website's photo pages, comes this inspirational image of some fellow Massholes. Perhaps, there's hope after all.

While you're there, check out the lefty wingnut section on page 5.

Also, this quote from a fellow citizen of the Commonwealth and patriot extraordinaire, Samuel Adams, with whom I happen to share a birthday (September 27th). Well, him AND Meat Loaf to be more precise, but that's not exactly a bragging point now, is it?

"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. We seek not your council nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."

- Samuel Adams

Sometimes I think it's the gyroscopic motion of all the dead patriots buried in Massachusetts spinning in their graves that keeps the planet aligned on its axis.
