Woman Charged With Giving Teenagers Guns

DERRY, N.H. -- A Derry woman has been charged with giving guns to two teenage boys involved in a fight outside of her home.

Janice Murphy, 40, was charged with two counts of criminal liability for the conduct of another and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said that on July 6, Murphy gave a handgun and a rifle to two boys, ages 14 and 15. The boys had apparently called up two other boys with whom they had been fighting.

The other boys showed up at Murphy's home expecting a fistfight, but, police said, they encountered the teenagers armed with guns. Police said that one of the guns was fired. Investigators said Murphy originally told them she had fired the shot, but they determined that one of the teens did.

"There had been some sort of discussion about a fistfight with some other juveniles who showed up at the home," Capt. Vern Thomas said. "It's alleged that Ms. Murphy provided firearms to the individuals in her home, juveniles who then went outside and had a confrontation with the kids outside. One round was fired."

Murphy was released on $2,000 bail and is due back in court later this month.
