Misleading Headline of the Day

From The Republican (Springfield, MA):

Springfield man sentenced for shooting 2 men who broke into his home

SPRINGFIELD - A city man who shot two men, chasing them after they had broken into his home and beat him, Thursday was sentenced to 18 months in the Hampshire Couny [sic] House of Corrections.

I thought the same thing.

"God damn Massachusetts, man!!! What the hell???"

However, reading the rest of the article paints an entirely different picture. In fact, it would appear the guy got off easy.

Gonzalez had faced 12 charges, including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, four illegal weapons charges and a count of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

The state is not going forward with the armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges, as well as the two most serious gun charges.

Contrary to what the headline says, all charges pertaining to the shooting were dropped, as they should have been. Even the scumbaggiest of scumbags has the right to defend himself (and his wife and kids, if applicable) in his home from fellow scumbags.
